Youssef's Story: Bravely Charting His Course Forward; From Lebanon to Finding Myself.

Youssef Saleh grew up in what many would describe as a slice of heaven. Surrounded by the beauty of the Mediterranean and the Lebanese mountains, his early life was framed by the natural splendor of his homeland. But, despite the setting of his upbringing, Youssef's story is anything but idyllic.

Born and raised in Joun, a picturesque village in the south of Lebanon, Youssef loved taking care of animals and listening to Lady Gaga. But his journey from a small village in Lebanon to seeking asylum in the United States is a series of struggles against social norms in pursuit of personal freedom.

From a young age, Youssef sensed that he was different from the other boys, a realization that would set him on a path of self-discovery and, eventually, conflict. His adolescence was marked by a pivotal moment when, at the age of 16, he came out to his parents. This revelation changed his relationship with his family and his community, leading, eventually to his exile and rebirth in America.

Youssef's tale is not just about the challenges of growing up gay in a conservative society; it's also a story about the power of music to inspire. Lady Gaga's album "Born This Way" became a beacon of hope, giving shape and words to the feelings he had – a reminder that there were places in the world where people like him could live openly. Youssef faced relentless bullying at school and a lack of understanding from those around him. He moved schools repeatedly to find a space that his parents approved and where he would be safe.

In the end, his decision to leave Lebanon was driven not just by his personal struggles but also by a desire to pursue his passion — a career in veterinary medicine. His journey took him to Russia on a full scholarship, where he mastered the Russian language and completed his studies, even though that country is deeply intolerant of LGBTQ+ people. Despite these challenges, Youssef found love and a semblance of freedom, though always tempered by the need for discretion.

Encouraged by friends and mentors – many of them in the animal-care world – Youssef made the courageous decision to seek asylum in the US. And when he finally did arrive in the United States he came as part of a volunteer initiative, appropriately accompanying 18 cats who were heading to their “forever homes.”

It marked the beginning of a new chapter. In the US, he found a community that accepted him for who he is, offering support and a sense of belonging that had eluded him for much of his life. His story is a poignant reminder of the universal quest for acceptance and the right to live authentically. It highlights the stark differences in the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals across the world and the ongoing struggle for rights and recognition.

Now in the country of Lady Gaga and in his own “forever home,” Youssef's difficulties are far from over. He faces new challenges in the US, from financial security and the process of seeking asylum to the struggle of establishing himself professionally in a new country. Yet, his story is one of hope and resilience, inspiring us all to stand in solidarity with those who seek refuge and acceptance.
